The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) announced that California pharmacist Paul W. Lofholm, President of Ross Valley Pharmacy in Larkspur, California has been named as the recipient of the 2011 Remington Honor Medal, the highest honor bestowed by APhA. He was selected in recognition of his life-long work in continuing education, advancement of pharmacy practice and support of student pharmacist programs. Lofholm is a past president of the California Pharmacists Association (CPhA).
"I was very honored by the APhA Committee and past presidents' selection to join such an elite group of America's pharmacists," stated Dr. Lofholm when asked about receiving the news of the award. He added, "Those who have come before me have been agents of change and game changers." Lofholm is such a firm believer in the pharmacy profession, that he has perpetuated the career choice within his own family. Five of his immediate family members are practicing pharmacists and another 10 or more extended family members also practice pharmacy.
The Remington Honor Medal, named for eminent community pharmacist, manufacturer and educator Joseph P. Remington, was established in 1918 to recognize distinguished service on behalf of American pharmacy. In his nomination letter, Dr. Robert Gibson wrote, "I know of only a few pharmacists who can match the magnitude of Dr. Lofholm's dedication to the profession of pharmacy, his selfless devotion to the care of patients and the education of future pharmacists, and the longevity, consistency and quality of his many creative contributions to the advancement of the profession."
Dr. Lofholm's dedication to the advancement of pharmacy has been recognized with many honors. In 2006, Dr. Lofholm was inducted into the California Pharmacy Hall of Fame. That was followed by the CPhA Pharmacist of the Year Award in 2007. In addition, Dr. Lofholm's commitment to leadership in the profession has seen him serve as the President of CPhA in 2008 and also the V.P. of the Pharmacy Foundation of California in 2007. On the national level, Dr. Lofholm has received numerous other awards. He holds more than 10 professional pharmacy certifications and has authored and contributed to nearly 20 publications.
