Dr Belinda Wozencroft, a general practitioner from Perth, Western Australia, who recently completed her general practice training, has won the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) General Practice Registrar of the Year Award 2010.
The General Practice Registrar of the Year Award recognises a general practice registrar's commitment to general practice, learning, and to serving their patients, practice and community.
The RACGP sets and maintains the standards for quality clinical practice, education and training, and research in Australian general practice and is Australia's largest professional general practice organisation, representing urban and rural general practitioners. The RACGP awards are an acknowledgment by the profession of excellence in general practice.
Presenting the award at the Academic Session held during GP10 - the conference for general practice - in Cairns, RACGP President Dr Chris Mitchell congratulated Dr Wozencroft and thanked her for her outstanding service to the College, to general practice and to the community.
"Dr Wozencroft's supervisors have earmarked her as a potential future educator due to her exceptional aptitude and enthusiasm for general practice. The drive and focus Dr Wozencroft applies to her work is commendable and has a positive impact on those working with her.
"Dr Wozencroft is constantly developing and refining her skills as a general practitioner. Her professionalism, compassion and skills as a general practitioner have been highlighted as her strengths by her supervisors," he said.
Dr Mitchell said that Dr Wozencroft's ongoing service to the community has driven the path of her training and career.
"Prior to medical school, Dr Wozencroft worked as nurse, serving the remote communities of Punmu and Kunawarritji, Western Australia. While studying medicine, she has continued to work as a nurse in these remote Indigenous communities, during her university vacations.
"Dr Wozencroft continues to actively promote the general practice training program at information sessions and through workshops held for new GP registrars. Her enthusiasm, passion and commitment to all facets of general practice, be it education, advocacy or in practice, have ensured that Dr Wozencroft stands out," he said.
The winner of the RACGP General Practice Registrar of the Year Award receives a $5,000 educational scholarship and a profile in Good Practice, the RACGP's monthly news journal. In some cases, it may be appropriate for the general practice registrar to attend a national or international conference on a subject which relates to their future career.
